New York sportsbook handle dropped in July from the month before but revenue rose, as the state’s operators had an 11.4% win rate for the month.
The eight operators in the state took $1.88 billion in bets, resulting in gross gaming revenue (GGR) of $214 million, per a New York State Gaming Commission report issued Friday. In June, operators reported $116.8 million in GGR on $2.2 billion handle, but hold was just 5.19%.
For the fiscal year that started in April, New York bettors have placed $8.4 billion in wagers online, resulting in revenue of $779 million and tax payments of $397.5 million to the state, which charges a 51% tax.
Three quarters of New York’s eight online platforms showed growth against last year — in July 2025, operators took $1.4 billion in wagers for GGR of $155.6 million.
World Cup effect
A key difference from last July was this year’s World Cup, which was held at sites across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The final, as well as several other games, were played at the Meadowlands in New Jersey, likely driving local interest. In July, there were 32 knockout round games, among them Norway’s 2-1 upset of Brazil at the Meadowlands.
July is normally considered the “doldrums of summer,” with only baseball in its regular season and the three other major professional sports leagues on break.
The state gaming commission also reported weekly results that showed New York bettors wagered 8.7% more in the week ending Aug. 2 than the previous week, with DraftKings, Fanatics Betting & Gaming, and FanDuel posting double-digit hold. Operators reported $384.8 million in handle and $46.5 million in GGR.
