Through legal sportsbooks alone — nevermind sweepstakes sites, crypto apps, offshore books, prediction markets, Big Jim at the corner bar, social apps, DFS, pick ‘em, and probably a few more we’re forgetting — Americans are expected to bet about $30 billion on the 2025 NFL season, according to a Thursday American Gaming Association (AGA) press release.

To compare apples to something that’s decidedly not apples, the entire e-commerce world in Africa is doing $30 billion a year.

Or put another way: That’s $115 for every 21-and-over adult in America.

This $30 billion number represents an 8.5% increase over last season’s handle of $27.6 billion.

“This season, fans have more ways than ever to responsibly engage with the game they love. Legal sports betting enhances the fun and friendly competition that make NFL games and traditions even more special,” said AGA President and CEO Bill Miller in a press release. “With strong consumer protections and a shared commitment to responsibility, the legal, regulated sports betting industry encourages all football fans to have a game plan before placing a bet and ensure their gameday experience — regardless of the outcome of a bet or the game — remains enjoyable.”

The $30 billion estimate includes preseason games, futures, the playoffs, and Super Bowl LX, to be held in February 2026.

Safe bets ahead

The AGA is also reminding would-be bettors of its national advertising campaign titled Have A Game Plan. Bet Responsibly.

The responsible gambling campaign encourages people to stick to five key principles:

  • Set a Budget and Stick to It: Determine how much you are willing to spend and never chase losses.
  • Keep it Social: Betting should be a form of entertainment shared with friends and family.
  • Know the Odds: Understand the games and your chances of winning.
  • Play Legally: Use regulated, legal betting platforms.
  • Keep Your Cool: Athlete harassment is never acceptable and good sportsmanship is for everyone.

Currently, 38 states and Washington, D.C. offers their citizens access to fully legal sportsbooks. Missouri’s regulator is set to launch legal digital and retail betting Dec. 1.
